When you work in the Breton/Burton area, you usually eat lunch around the Breton Village Mall. Most people limit their options to Blimpie, Hungry Howie's, and the ungodly expensive lunch counter at D & W where a trip to the salad bar can generate a bill that looks more DTE than D & W. However, there is also an often overlooked, quaint Chinese rest...oh hell, let's call a spade a spade: it's a sketchy-looking hole in the wall called Grand Lakes. Now as most savvy diners know, choosing an eatery solely on its appearance is foolish. This is especially true with Chinese restaurants, which tend to have the aesthetic appeal of housing projects, and whose levels of quality bear no correlation to their resemblances to Cabrini-Green. And in the case of Grand Lakes--while I'm not about to wax ecstatic on their sublime Asian cuisine--it's accurate to say their food handily rises above their humble storefront. They're not trying to reinvent the wheel: they're just trying to make decent enough Chinese food and sell it at a decent enough price, and at this they succeed. Szechuan beef, cashew chicken, General Tso's chicken, crab rangoon, and all the other staples are fine. I always ask for white rice instead of fried rice, though, as there are weird-tasting mystery meat morsels in the fried version whose origins I don't know and probably don't want to know. The owner is a very friendly guy, always there working his ass off and happy to serve you. The value is high, and you'll be satisfied, though not mindblown, with your food. Give the fine folks at Grand Lakes a fair shake.

Love this place. Grand Lakes really is a well-kept secret, surrounded by other typical lunch eateries. Lunch specials come with your main choice and pork fried rice all at a very reasonable price. I live .3 miles away and frequently come here for the General Tso- best in town. All other typical Chinese dishes are available and also very tasty. And no matter what you get it's always '5-10 minutes.'

This is my go to Chinese spot if I want shrimp fried rice.I always get the same thing so I can't really review anything else.The service is always fast and the restaurant always appears clean when I come.

Have not been to GLCR for a while. I was craving for Chinese food and for some reason thought of them. Ordered their house fried rice and General Tso. Extremely disappointed. I should have just gone to China Garden on Cascade which would have been of slightly better quality. And I completely forgot about Foo Yen in EGR and Lai Thai on Leonard which I knew I would have been very happy with for the same price or less. Both within a 10 minute drive. The fried rice was very generic and hardly had anything (roast pork and chicken). How about some bean sprouts, eggs, peas, etc? Tasteless and I do not understand the yellow color. The batter of the General Tso chicken was so-so. The sauce was ok. I should keep in mind Foo Yen and Lai thai next time.

My husband and I live closeby and wanted Grand Lakes to be our go-to Chinese takeout restaurant however, after 2 disapointing visits, we've turned our business elsewhere (we now patron Tea Garden). The lo mein is bland and leaves something to be desired. The sweet and sour port and general tso's chicken we're so fried you couldn't even taste the meat. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times? Nope.

The service here is friendly and fast. The food can be a little on the bland side to me but its good enough, especially for the location and price. Pretty standard menu.
